Situated in the scenic market town of Crickhowell, nestled within the beautiful Usk Valley to the south of the Black Mountains and nearby to the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) National Park is a superb, newly opened coffee house & kitchen serving up delicious seasonal food and fab coffee.
Coffee is from Extract Coffee Roasters of Bristol and the bread, including their excellent sourdough is sourced from the award winning Alex Gooch bakery in nearby Hereford. Did we also mention the Black Mountain Smokery and Cashells Butchers based in Crickhowell as local suppliers too?
During our Sunday visit the brunch menu featured a delicious Cashells bacon sandwich, avocado on sourdough, bacon & egg pretzel bun and varying egg options; Royale, Benedict or on sourdough toast to name a few. Additionally there’s American style pancakes with streaky bacon, scrambled egg & maple syrup or a berry compote and Nutella option too.
Lunch, served from midday is as equally tempting and on our autumnal visit included a halloumi pretzel bun, roast chicken, smoked salmon or Greek salad, alongside a loaded falafel mezze, Welsh rarebit and choice of sandwiches & toasties.
The sweet treats are all homemade with cakes ranging from a moreish blackberry, lemon & yogurt cake to caramel heaven, banoffee, lemon drizzle, coffee & walnut to carrot. Tray-bakes include maple & pecan, caramel, granola bars, caramel shortbread and berry flapjacks. You’ll also of course find a most excellent Welsh cake alongside the Portuguese staple of Pastel de Nata, Alex Gooch’s famous almond croissants and lemon tartlets too.
Inside you’ll find plenty of tables with a quick turnaround, alongside a large sheltered and undercover rear terrace which can be accessed by wheeling your bikes through the cafe (most welcome).
