Gilks’ Garage Café is not just another hipster or ‘themed café’, it’s been run by the same family for generations and originally started out as a Rootes Motors dealer selling Hillman and Chrysler cars.
The cafe has been meticulously themed to signal back to it’s motoring history, with touches such as the original fuel pump standing proud as you walk in, an original Hillman chopped in half serving as a sofa and oil canisters used as counter lamps.
Park your bike triathlon style on the bike racks located outside, where there’s even complimentary bike locks provided. You’ll even find electric charging points if turning up in four wheels and volts under the bonnet.
The fantastic coffee is sourced from Monsoon Estates in Atherstone on Stour and you’ll find it hard to resist on of their delicious homemade cakes or traybakes, including their devine apple cinnamon & raisin or famous gluten free Victoria sponge cake – you’ll not taste the difference!
On the motor themed menu there’s a wide selection of breakfast and lunch goodies with veggie, vegan and gluten free options aplenty. For those early morning rides we can highly recommend the ‘full’ and ‘interim’ service all day brunch or bacon & maple syrup pancakes. As for lunch the homemade mac n cheese and sourdough baguettes are fantastic, as is the rather filling ‘mighty mechanic’s’ beef burger.
If on an evening ride, Friday and Saturday evenings you’ll find them serving up pizzas and burgers between 17:00 and 20:30.
Whilst you’re there be sure to peer into the replica Rootes workshop adjacent to the counter, complete with original Rootes dealership equipment and vintage vehicles of the day.
